Family Activities
Choose one (or more!) of these Earth Day activities to complete during the week of April 17-22
Document your family's Earth Day project and post the pics to the Lenah Mill Community Facebook group, tagging Abby Ingham Lull no later than end-of-day Saturday, April 22! You will be entered into a drawing for a $25 Amazon gift card.
Neighborhood Cleanup - Grab some gloves and garbage bags and beautify your neighborhood by removing any trash left behind in public spaces around the neighborhood.
Make a recycled-material bird feeder - There are TONS of ways to DIY a bird feeder using recycled materials. You can use recycled toilet paper or paper towel tubes, popsicle sticks, and even pine cones! You can find some homemade bird feeder instructions here: https://t.ly/Oema
Make seed bombs or seed paper - Make seed bombs with clay or seed paper using recycled paper scraps from around the house. Try to use native wildflower seeds (try to avoid invasive plants) and give them out to friends and family.
Start a garden - Start a family garden with flowers, fruits, herbs, and/or vegetables, and learn about taking care of plants in our planting zone. You can start simple with a few potted plants on your deck or patio. You can learn more about NoVA container gardening here!
Start composting - Save food scraps and yard waste and start your own backyard composting system. Start small with a simple back patio compost tumbler and add the finished compost to your new garden pots from activity #4 or to your existing flower beds.
Create a bug hotel - Attract vital pollinators and other beneficial insects to your own garden and to increase the biodiversity across the entire neighborhood by creating an easy bug hotel using recycled materials and items gathered from around the neighborhood.
GET CREATIVE - Have your own idea for celebrating Earth Day as a family? Send your idea to Abby Lull (abby.ingham [at] gmail [dot] com) and be sure to document your project on the Lenah Mill Community Facebook group by the end of Saturday, April 22.
